Arguments against truth-conditional theories of significance
Truth-conditional theories regarding meaning claim that meaning is a function in the conditions that define truth. But, this theory restricts meaning to the linguistic phenomena. It is Davidson's main argument that truth-values can't be always truthful. So, it is essential to know the difference between truth-values from a flat claim.
The Epistemic Determination Argument is a way to provide evidence for truth-conditional theories regarding meaning. It is based on two basic principles: the completeness of nonlinguistic facts and the understanding of the truth condition. But Daniel Cohnitz has argued against these premises. So, his argument is devoid of merit.
Another common concern with these theories is their implausibility of meaning. However, this issue is dealt with by the mentalist approach. This is where meaning is examined in words of a mental representation instead of the meaning intended. For example, a person can be able to have different meanings for the exact word, if the user uses the same word in the context of two distinct contexts however, the meanings of these words may be identical if the speaker is using the same phrase in multiple contexts.

Although most theories of definition attempt to explain significance in terms of mental content, non-mentalist theories are occasionally pursued. It could be due an aversion to mentalist theories. They could also be pursued as a result of the belief that mental representation must be examined in terms of the representation of language.

This is why he developed a pragmatics theory to explain sentence meanings by using rules of engagement and normative status.

Grice's analysis that analyzes speaker-meaning puts significant emphasis on the person who speaks's intention , and its connection to the significance and meaning. It does not cover all types of speech act. Grice's approach fails to include the fact speech is often employed to explain the meaning of sentences. This means that the meaning of a sentence can be reduced to the meaning of its speaker.
